Public Engagement with Schools

An important part of the BREATH Public Engagement mission is outreach to schools within the Partner regions.  This involves explaining lung health and disease in the context of biomedical science, and increasing awareness of COPD – including presentations on smoking as a (preventable) major risk factor.

School outreach extends across all three partners.  Below is an example of the ongoing BREATH drive in Dumfries & Galloway:

BREATH team presented the COPD/lung health programme to senior pupils at Eastwood High; PhD student Kimberly Black talked about her route from school to a PhD presenting at international conference.

Respiratory Nursing Students Identify Lung Disease Prevalent in Ayrshire

As part of respiratory physiology lectures on the ‘Responding to Ill Health’ module, enthusiastic second year nursing students at UWS-Ayr campus collectively identify COPD as the 3rd top fatal disease globally, prevalent in Ayrshire.

As part of World COPD Day, the UWS BREATH team of staff nad PhD students present on the link between smoking and COPD to the enthusiastic pupils of Penninghame and St Ninian’s Primaries, Newton Stewart.

UWS students increase Public Awareness of COPD

In response to the GOLD Board of Directors challenge to increase public awarness, BREATH engages with UWS Nursing students at Ayr campus, and Science students at Paisley campus, to identify the lung disease which is not only the third top killer disease globally, but is also prevalent in Southwest Scotland – including Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway.
